What Does It Mean That You Have Control Over Your Life?

On January 2nd, I tweeted “You have control over your life”. Some may probably ask themselves “how do I have control over my life when this has happened and that has happened?!”. When you say and ask yourself this, you are putting yourself in a victim position where things just happen to you and you have no control over it. If there’s one thing that I learned in 2014 is that indeed, things just happen in life that will be out of your control and it’s not this that I am referring to when I say that you have control over your life. Even though you may not have control over every single thing in your life because you don’t have control over what others do, there will be certain situations that will be out of your control, what you DO have control over is your perception and the way you will deal with the situation.

Your perception of things affect the way you decide to handle situations, the way you interact with others, the way you process things and the way you feel. This is why it is important that you take control of your mind and thoughts. The way you handle a person or situation affects, I’ve noticed, the memory and feelings you have over what happened. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more pleasant memories and even times in our life?! Well, for this to happen, it is under your control. No one else can control this for you. Decide now to see the lessons in the things that occur in your life. Decide now that a negative experience will affect you in a positive way. Decide now to empower yourself with positive thoughts.

I would like to clarify that I am not saying to see the world as all rainbow and sunshine when I say “decide now that a negative experience will affect you in a positive way”. Not at all! It is important to see your reality for what it really is but to remember that the way you view your reality is the way it will continue being and a negative experience doesn’t have to leave you a huge, ugly scar. Instead, allow that negative experience to be a catalyst for something beautiful.

Another thing I must add here is that you have to have the belief that indeed you are in control of your life. Without this belief, you will think you have no control, therefore, you will act like a person who has no control over their life. That’s how important your beliefs are in your life. So I challenge you to start believing that you do have control over your life.

You may not have much control over external circumstances, but you do have control over your internal circumstances, meaning your mind, your perceptions, your thoughts and your emotions as well as your actions so believe it or not, with all this, you DO have a lot of control over your life. Taking control over your life is one of the first steps to achieving balance and well-being. As I wrote in an article for The Manhattan Times newspaper and for The Bronx Free Press last year, your health start with you so start taking control over your life now.
